15 Minutes: An Arts-based Exploration of the Patient-Provider relationship (2022)

15 Minutes explores the provider-patient interaction in clinical settings, through an arts-based, exploratory approach. 15 minutes represents the average time of a clinical visit within the U.S. and UK healthcare systems. The project takes the form of a card game that aims to generate a space for improvisation and role play in clinical communication classes.

15 Minutes raises the following questions: What can be addressed in the clinical visit, within a short time frame? In this context, what are the best strategies for building a patient-clinician relationship that encourages observation, listening, and empathetic response? The idea for the project originates out of my experience as a patient in Finland, Canada, the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. The game structure was inspired by my son’s card games of Go Fish, Old Maid and Crazy Eights.
